TATARA: An object of strength
As charred wood stands on brittle sand it forms an ephemeral obelisk.
A monument to lost heritage. Forsa, an object of strength, a sign of valor, and a testament to the endurance of those forgotten. Sabiduria, offering wisdom from the past as long as time permits. Bendishon, seeking blessings from the sea. The duality of which was not lost on our ancestors, Tatara.
Mixed Media (wood, sand, clay and bronze), 80 X 80 X 260 cm, 2019
Exhibition: The Best Fantastic New Thing | Location: University Bookshop Otago
Before installing the sculpture in the space I also performed a cleaning ritual to prepare the space for the work. Then after the exhibition I brought the sculpture to the beach were I gathered some of the materials and allowed the ocean to destroy and reclaim the structure.
