An Altar of Salt and Rust

Pictures by Sarah Fokke | Exhibition: Rondom het Fort | Location: Fort Maarsseveen

This installation consists of three clay vessels dedicated to the unseen energies and spirits around us. As the water evaporates, salt grows over everything, leaving a tangible mark. The growing salt crystals symbolizes the purity of the spirits and energy around us. In contrast the salt also corrodes, transforming material into a memory of itself. As the season progresses the weather and the environment also effects the altar, as rain, wind and the sun intervenes, making it a living altar.
